What's "ultra-polished"?

polished

Before we get into “Ultra Fine Polishing”, let’s get to know “Polishing”.

Polishing is the use of physical machinery, chemical drugs and other methods, so that the surface roughness of the object to reduce, to achieve the effect of finishing technology. Polishing technology is mainly used in the fields of precision machinery and optical industry. The purpose of polishing is not to improve the dimensional or geometrical accuracy of the workpiece, but to obtain a smooth surface, a mirror finish.

Super polished

Ultra-precision polishing is a kind of physical polishing; it refers to the use of special abrasive tools, optical parts, quartz oscillators, glass and other materials, in the polishing liquid containing abrasive, pressed on the surface of the workpiece being processed, high-speed rotary motion. The characteristics of the polishing method are high precision (better than 0.1 m), high smoothness (better than 10 nm), and low surface damage layer of the workpiece. With this technique, a surface roughness of Ra 0.008μm can be achieved, which is the highest among all polishing methods. This method is often used for optical lens molds.

Ultra Fine Polishing vs Normal Fine Grinding

What is the difference between ultra-fine polishing and normal fine grinding?

Normal finish grinding generates a lot of heat, and high material removal affects the surface hardness and microstructure of the workpiece, which may lead to surface defects. With ultra-fine polishing, the machining temperature is lower and the material removal rate is reduced to better maintain the surface characteristics of the workpiece.

In this ever-changing era, the ever-increasing demand for refinement in various industries makes the advantages of ultra-polishing more and more obvious, not only to reduce friction and extend the service life of the workpiece, but also to reduce energy consumption and quieter operation.

Features of Meta polishing

  • Realization of free-form surfaces with ultra-precision polishing
  • 100x under the microscope, no polishing marks on the surface.
  • Effectively reduces surface roughness and controls Ra value.
  • Effective reduction of waviness (Wa)
  • Precise maintenance of workpiece after polishing.
  • Suitable for various materials such as electroless nickel, copper, aluminum, tungsten steel and mold steel.

Recognizing “Electroless Nickel”

Conventional plating uses the principle of electrolysis to lay a layer of metal on the surface of the workpiece, which is called electroplating. However, this method may cause uneven plating thickness of the workpiece due to high or low current or weak dead space. Therefore, if the surface of the workpiece is irregular, it can be treated by the characteristic of electroless nickel.

Electroless nickel plating is done by immersing the workpiece in a chemical plating solution without the aid of an anode plate and plating tools. This surface treatment provides a consistent film thickness for deep holes, grooves or irregular shapes that may appear on the workpiece.

The “Ultra-Precision Polishing” technology of HONWAY can realize “electroless nickel polishing”.

Characteristics of “Electroless Nickel”

  • Corrosion resistance: Passed 200hrs acetic acid spray test
(Coating conditions: film thickness over 40μm, roughness RZ <1μm, metal substrate ST52)
  • Abrasion resistance: 10 mg / 1000 rpm ( Taber test, friction roll CS10 )
  • High ductility: >2%
  • Plating uniformity: Tolerance of about 10%
  • High hardness: approx. 450 – 640HV, up to 1000 – 1100HV after heat treatment
  • Electrical conductivity: approx. 60 – 120 μΩ / cm
  • Thermal conductivity: approx. 0.01 – 0.014 cal / cm / sec / °C
  • Coefficient of thermal expansion: approx. 12.1 – 14.5 μm / m / °C

"Ultra-precision polishing" is the soul of the modern electronics industry.

ultra-precision machining

Ultra-precision machining has entered the nanometer scale, called nanomachining, and is used to create high-precision parts with high surface quality. Ultra-precision polishing is one of the technologies of ultra-precision machining.

The Value of Ultra-Precision Polishing

“Ultra-Precision Polishing is the driving force behind the “Integrated Circuit Transformation Revolution”. The mission of ultra-precision polishing in the modern electronics industry is not only to flatten different materials, but also to flatten multi-layer materials.

In the case of wafer manufacturing, polishing is the last part of the manufacturing process. Modern requirements for the fineness of optoelectronic substrate materials such as sapphire and monocrystalline silicon have reached the nanometer level, which can be achieved with the use of ultra-precision polishing technolog

The Importance of Ultra-Precision Polishing to the Manufacturing Industry

How important is ultra-precision polishing in manufacturing? Its application areas can be directly described: integrated circuit manufacturing, medical devices, automotive parts, digital parts, precision molds, various types of bearings, aerospace equipment.

As a technically demanding synthetic process, ultra-precision polishing must consist of both equipment and materials (polishing fluids), one without the other.

Ultra-precision polished free-form surfaces

The use of freeform surfaces is growing, and in the case of automobiles, the technology extends all the way from the car body to the LED optical mirrors. Although diamond turning and flying cutter milling can achieve excellent surface finish of free-form lenses, the polishing marks left behind will cause deformation or stray light when focusing, but ultra-precision polishing will not leave such processing texture. The ultra-precision polishing developed by Foxlink perfectly realizes the ultra-precision polishing of free-form surfaces, and there is no polishing mark under 100x microscope.

In today’s high-tech and optoelectronic era, conventional polishing technology can no longer cope with more advanced applications, ultra-precision polishing breaks through the limitations of other processing methods can not be defeated, and has become the soul of the modern electronics indus
