Dysprosium

Dysprosium is similar to most rare earth elements: it is soft enough to be cut with a knife, has a silvery sheen, and is relatively stable in air; Dysprosium absorbs neutrons well and is used in control rods for nuclear reactors; Dysprosium is also used in color television tubes and mercury lamps, where the magnetic properties of the alloy allow for a more efficient performance of the record’s public functions. Dysprosium alloys can be used to make neodymium-based magnets, which retain their magnetic properties well at high temperatures and are widely used in electric cars and wind turbines.
